Harvesting Kinnaur Apples : What Goes Behind!

Harvesting apples in Kinnaur is not one, two or three people’s job. It’s a task where the whole family, extended families, all the helpers come together to work on.

It’s a barter that we do. If someone’s family members or helpers come to help us in our orchard, next time someone from our family have to go to help them during harvest.

After all it is something that requires manual and collaborative work from climbing the trees with the baskets, plucking and filling the baskets, collecting all loaded baskets together in a common space in the farm where the apples are handpicked and segregated as per the colour and sizes.

While harvesting days are quite laborious, bringing food to the farm & having it with everyone and munching freshly plucked apples in between the tasks, we can say Harvest days are most engaging and happy days in the farms with a lot of giggles of kids chilling and playing and giving their hands wherever they can with all their enthusiasm.
